Hormone replacement for men may one day be as widespread as hormone replacement for women. Many of the problems commonly experienced during mid-life such as weight gain, depression, diminished sex drive and performance, diminished energy and zest, irritability, trouble concentrating and remembering, decreased muscle strength and higher cholesterol can be result of declining hormones.
Testosterone supplementation for men- by injection, patch, cream or sublingual tablet, can have has a beneficial impact on cellular energy production, brain function, oxygenation, insulin sensitivity, and cholesterol. Although gaining in popularity and respectability, testosterone replacement (primarily by injection) has been practiced for more than fifty years. Controlled studies show cardiovascular, cognitive and other benefits when an aging man is given supplemental testosterone by injection, patch, cream, gel, or sublingual tablet.
In addition more studies show the important role of DHEA and testosterone (and possibly progesterone) in the prevention of brain diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's and simply maintaining mental vigor. DHEA levels have been correlated with potency more strongly than testosterone levels. Dr. William Regelson, one of the chief proponents of hormone replacement for men, emphasizes that DHEA also protects against stress-related injury.
