HRT Update
Did you know that estrogen is actually not one hormone, but a group of three hormones: estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), and estriol (E3). A high ratio of estriol to the other estrogens has been associated with a lower risk of breast cancer. Premarin®, a drug commonly used in estrogen replacement therapy, is derived from pregnant mare urine. Because horse estrogen is foreign to the human body, people lack the enzymes and cofactors to metabolize it safely.

For Men Only
Men experience changes in hormone levels as they age, just as women do. Symptoms of low testosterone include fatigue, lack of sex drive, depression, aches and pains, decreased strength and endurance, difficulty in achieving or maintaining an erection, and even hot flashes.

Remember Sex?
A third of women experience loss of libido during perimenopause, due to naturally declining testosterone levels as well as medications that may reduce the male hormone (such as certain antidepressants, birth control pills, and some drugs for high blood pressure). About 40 percent of menopausal women lose interest in sex. Fortunately, many physicians today are including testosterone in hormone replacement therapies for women.

Healthy and Fit
Recent research shows that sweat contains a substance that weakens bacteria, making it easier for your immune system to fight infection. So sweat up a storm during your next workout!

Quote of the Month
"It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know what you ache for; and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing." -Oriah Mountain Dreamer
Letters

I just wanted to let you know that I have been on the extended release capsules form of hormone therapy for six weeks now (from College Pharmacy) and am doing so much better. I had really bad hot flashes and I would say they are now 85-90 percent better than they were. That's pretty darn good in such a short time. ... I am very pleased with them and plan on continuing this therapy for as long as my doctor thinks is appropriate. I never did well on synthetic hormones, but these biologically identical hormones are working great. Thanks to College Pharmacy for their help and advice!

Q&A
Q: Is there an advantage to saliva testing vs. blood testing for hormone levels?

A: Saliva hormone levels represent the free hormones, those available to receptor sites. Blood hormone levels represent your body's total hormone content (bound and free). Most hormones (about 95 percent) are bound to proteins in your bloodstream.
