For Women Only
If you've been feeling more "blue" since the change of seasons, you may indeed be SAD—affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder. Symptoms include fatigue, increased need for sleep, carbohydrate craving, and weight gain; they disappear during the spring and summer. Researchers believe that SAD is due to the lack of sunshine that comes with winter's shorter days; less than 1% of the population in Florida show symptoms of SAD, compared to 10% in Canada. Treatment may be as simple as spending more time outdoors and exercising more. In more extreme cases, experts recommend light therapy, or spending time under a light box.

For Men Only
Contrary to common belief, estrogen may play a role in male aggression, but only in connection with sunlight. Ohio State University researchers studying mice found that estrogen increased aggression during short, winter days but not during long, summer days. The finding counters the familiar notion that testosterone is the only hormone that regulates aggression. Several studies have now shown that, in some species, estrogen may be a factor as well.

Q&A

Q: Can I get the flu from a flu vaccine?

A: You won't get the flu from a flu shot, which contains killed flu viruses. Flu vaccines also are available in a nasal mist, however, which does contain weakened live flu viruses. Therefore, the mist is not recommended for those with compromised immune systems or certain health conditions. Most people have no reaction to the flu vaccine or only a mild one, consisting of fever, sore muscles, and fatigue. Because flu vaccine viruses are grown in chicken eggs, anyone allergic to eggs should not get the vaccine.
Healthy and Fit
New research indicates that a healthy diet is more effective in achieving weight loss than exercise alone, although exercise and diet together are even better. An Australian review of 43 weight-loss studies from 1985 until the present concluded that physical activity won't help you lose weight if you don't change unhealthy eating habits. Although diet appears to be most important in early weight loss, exercise is a key factor in maintaining the loss.
